How estimates are calculated
When Skipp creates a quick estimate, we're making several calculations based on the information you've given us about the project. You're able to edit the estimate before sharing with a homeowner.
Skipp calculates the cost of the actual materials and the estimated quantity needed:
Cost of materials
Skipp ingests pricing for all materials (cabinetry, cabinet accessories, surfaces, and sinks and faucets) directly from the manufacturers' catalog. When you select the materials, we're using the pricing we got from the manufacturer (MSRP). We strive to keep this as up to date as possible.
Quantity of materials
Skipp estimates the quantity of materials needed:
- Layout - the general shape you have in mind. This helps us understand if you'll need corner cabinets (like in L- and U-shaped layouts).
- Add Island - whether or not the design has an island
- Linear Footage - estimated linear footage of cabinetry
- Cabinet Height - short vs tall (tall means over 36")
- Cabinet Accessories: we base this on the estimated number of cabinets from the calculation above
- Surfaces: we base this on the estimated linear feet of cabinetry multiplied by the standard surface depth
- Sink & Faucet: we assume the quantity is one of each unless otherwise specified
Skipp estimates the unit price for each work scope (ex: install cabinets, install sink, etc.) based on data from a third party source that collects labor costs all around the country. We scale the estimate to match the size of the project as entered above.
Our labor estimates are very comprehensive, including everything from demolition costs to cabinet installation, plumbing, painting, and more. If you prefer to use your own labor numbers, you can easily override this estimate. Learn more here.
